Brit Awards 2020

Client: Brit Awards
Agency: Hello Charlie

This was my third year working on the Brit Awards with Hello Charlie. I was responsible for creating the broadcast package, a selection of set looks including projection mapping on the giant physical awards, and the performance visuals for ‘I don't wanna talk about it’ by Rod Stewart. I also worked on the launch show that aired in January, where I worked on the titles sequence and the set looks.

This year was an anniversary year so the set reflected both the heritage and the future of the Brits, with another amazing set by Misty Buckley. With multiple screen types and projection mapping to incorporate there was a need to create a huge amount of content as each look incorporated multiple assets. The concept of layering and heritage of old music venues was used for the broadcast kit, along with the idea of seeing ‘behind the curtain’ of production, so light boxes, backstage rigging and a pallet of grungy textures were used. These contrasted with the bright neons of the ‘future’ half of the show. Some glitching and colour separation helped soften everything and connect it all together.

For the Rod Stewart performance the concept was based around infinity mirrors and chandeliers, making the performance feel both sophisticated and intimate. Pulses of light patterns changed constantly throughout the performance hitting the major beats of the track.

The launch show went through several rounds of development - I worked on a series of chrome fluid simulations of the statue building, and created the particle system which warps around it. I also created some set designs which were used throughout the show.
